Impact of Communication on Employee Performance

Today’s world communication is an important and vital component of organizations activities.
Researchers found that effective communication improves job satisfaction (Holtzhausen, 2002) and which in turn improves productivity (Litterst & Eyo, 1982). Research has also shown that communication improves employee job performance (Goris, 2007), while poor communication results to low employee commitment to the organization (Kramer, 1999).
Modern management techniques are considering that employee performance can be increased by using power of communication.
Communication is the human activity that connect people together and establish relationships (Duncan & Moriaty, 1998). This means that individuals relate with each other by means of communication.
Managers are  spending majority of their time to  communicate to another by way of   face-to-face discussion, memos, notice boards, mass meeting, employees hand book, public lectures, etc. since  the basic functions of management (Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing and controlling) cannot be performed well without effective communication.
Setting up and clearly communicating performance standards and expectations, observation, providing feedback and conducting appraisals will be resulted to achieving organization goal and objectives.
The flow of effective communication will be able to identify the employees’ desirability towards organization’s goals and objectives.
Most of the theories are emphasized that Knowledge, Abilities and skill will enable to employees to perform well. Although communicating of expectation, benefits and policies to employees must be essential to be perform them well. Managers must provide clear job description to make employees to   immediate access to given task. Then employees are having understand of what did and what to be done.it will help employees to carry out their work easily and with no hesitation.
However People’s understanding and interpretation of the information could be vary to each other’s. Distorted information could be affected to the effective communication as well as  the employees’ performance.

  1. Not only for individuals employees, Communication is Vital for every team of the organisation. According to Davis (2004), he says communication is essential to effective team performance and communications for any organization. It is like blood flow in the human body.

  2. well said Ranga, Communication is main part of management.

Workforce communications is critical in keeping employees informed, engaged and aligned to the business, yet communications and HR teams have traditionally relied on an inefficient myriad of sources and spreadsheets to plan their approach. By allowing teams to build a more comprehensive, end-to-end communications strategy , not just one-off posts , Content Planner reduces the manual workload for teams, while providing a vantage point for the business to measure the impact of communications.

  3. Communication helps the organizational members to make both personal and organizational goals. And also help them to co-ordinate on the internal activities of the organization. To the extent the less effective communication of any organization is, the less effective its performance will be. E.g. the new employee orientation program is the first and most essential step for any organization towards efficient communication. New employees feel a great sense of confidence with orientation program. And this thing leaves a positive impact on their performance.
In this respect the job of a manager cannot be ignored, because problems occur when directions are not clear. Every manager should be a good communicator. Because he is one who communicates the message to one or a group.(Ivancevich & Matteson, 2002), effective communication will lead to job performance and achieve organizational goals.
