Rewards & Recognition in Motivation and its Effect to Employee Performance

There are many attempts have been taken place to explain what motivates people to work. Answer is more important since it can be used to influence people’s behaviors.
Motivation is all internal and external driving forces to make employees to perform in given task.
Perhaps high level of motivation will not be resulted to high level of performance. Since it is required certain level of skill to perform in given task.
Rewards & recognition is key in motivation. Since majority of people are getting motivated on financial & non-financial benefits.
The purpose of rewards and recognition is to provide a systematic approach for delivering positive consequences and attracts people to join the organization and ultimately be motivated to deliver higher level of performance (Pratheepkanth, 2011).Employees perform when they are rewarded  when they exceed the expectation  and targets. Rewards and recognition on performance will generate self-motivation and set the higher standard on work. Hence employees will take the task positively and put all effort to achieve the targets.
The system of rewards in the organization should be properly designed and implemented to strengthen the motivation which will directly impact on the employee’s performance (Njanja, Maina, Kibet, Njagi, 2013).
Rewards and recognition would be enhance the employee performance and it will be resulted to employee first achievement as well as frequent achievement which will be benefited to the organization. (Ibrar, Khan, 2015).

Measures of Rewards and Recognition or Promotion.
  • ·        Fixed or performance based pay
  • ·         Incentives
  • ·         Allowances
  • ·         Compensation

Management should be able to motivate employees by rewarding and recognizing while providing sufficient training to enhance the skill level to perform in given task. Therefore it will be helped to increase the performance of employees as well as the organization performance.

  1. According to David Maxfield, employee performance does not purely depend on reward and recognition, Employee performance relies on 3 things. First one is they should know their stuff, second they should focus on the right stuff, finally Build a reputation for being helpful.

One of the motivational factors in today’s context is Rewards and recognition of employees.Agarwal (1998) gave an explanation to the term reward as something that the organization offers to the employees in response of the work as well as performance and something which is desired by the employees. Apart from the salary that employees get it is important for employers to recognize the work that the employees do and reward them in proper way will create more motivation which leads to high performance of employees. An organization’s performance appraisal systems are more effective when there is a connection between the results of the performance management system and the reward system of the organization.
